I’ve recently been looking into Lev Vygotsky’s model of “The Zone of Proximal Development” or ZPD.

One of the ideas in this model is the concept of “more knowledgable others” or people who have a better understanding/higher ability level than the person learning related to a task,idea or concept being learned. These individuals are able to help the learner increase their ability through scaffolding.

ZPD and Scaffolding

I see huge parallels between Vygotsky’s model and what we often refer to as mentoring in software. Mentors are “more knowledgeable others”, mentees are individuals trying to grow a skill or ability.
